Worthington Manor’s Bunker Renovation Nears Completion
Worthington Manor began bunker renovation last year (November 2009) with little success due to the amount of snow last winter, wet spring followed by an unusually hot summer. Finally, the fall weather cooperated which enabled us to nearly complete the bunker renovation. Work has halted as of today due to the extreme cold weather, although we will resume as soon as possible. Regardless, with just 16 of 65 bunkers left to finish Worthington Manor expects to have all bunkers completed by May 1st for the 2011 golf season.
The extensive bunker renovation entails; removing existing sand, repair or replace drain tile, excavate 24” to 36” of bunker face/lip to create vertical wall (see illustration 1), install bunker erosion liner on vertical walls (see illustration 2) and then install 6” to 8” of new bunker sand. The principle behind excavating 24” to 36” of the bunker face is to prevent soil from contaminating the bunker sand. This design allows the water to flow through the sand to the bottom of the bunker as illustrated below helping to prevent the sand from being eroded to the bottom of the bunker.
